After making a large investment into new sod at your home or business property, you want to be sure it thrives. One of the most important things to consider next is watering. But how often should you be watering? How much water should you use? And what happens if you over or under-water? Fear not! In this post, we will cover everything you need to know about the ideal watering schedule for new sod in Rhode Island.
When it comes to watering your new sod, the frequency is key. It’s recommended that you water your sod at least twice per day for the first two weeks after installation. This helps ensure that the roots are properly established and can take hold of the soil beneath them. After two weeks, reduce to once per day for another two weeks, then around the 1 month mark, you can move to an every other day watering schedule.
Amount of Water
The amount of water needed depends on several factors such as temperature, humidity levels, wind speed and exposure to sun or shade. But the general consensus when establishing your new sod and afterwards is longer watering sessions on each zone of your system to ensure the water reaches adequate depths.
Time of Day
It’s best to water your lawn in the early evening and/or then again in the morning when temperatures are cooler and evaporation rates are lower. By doing so, you’ll ensure that moisture stays on the grass longer which allows it to soak down into the soil before being evaporated by sunlight, but not keeping the grass too wet where fungus could develop.
Monitoring and Adjusting
Monitoring your lawn’s moisture levels is key to maintaining its health. A good way to check soil moisture levels is to push a screwdriver into the ground up to 6 inches deep. If it goes in easily, then the soil is moist enough; if it’s hard to push through or comes out dry, then it needs more water. New, more modern irrigation systems also offer soil moisture monitoring to automate this process.
